Wolfgang Castle (Hanau)

Wolfgang Hunting Lodge was a hunting lodge of the Counts of Hanau in the (today's) Wolfgang State Forest.

The building is located in the district of the city of Hanau, Hesse, in the Wolfgang district. It is located away from the built-up area in the forest and is now part of the Wolfgang Forestry Office. The postal address is: Rodenbacher Chaussee 10a.

The hunting lodge was built in 1715 under the last Count of Hanau, Johann Reinhard III, near the ruins of the late medieval monastery of St. Wolfgang.

It is a simply designed, six-axis, two-story, baroque building, whose centrally located entrance is only slightly emphasized. It was built in half-timbered style and is plastered. It is covered by a mansard roof. The historic staircase still exists. Otherwise, nothing of the presumably originally simple furnishings has been preserved. In addition, a clearing leading to the building emphasizes the baroque idea of a visual axis.

After the annexation of the Electorate of Hesse and Hanau by the Kingdom of Prussia after the war of 1866, the administration of the forest was reorganized according to Prussian ideas in 1868 and a chief forestry office was established, today's Hessian Forestry Office Wolfgang. The building has served as the administrative building for the forestry office ever since.

The former hunting lodge is now a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act.
