Wisent Castle
Wisent Castle is a listed building in Amelsdorf, a village in the municipality of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring in Lower Austria.
Wisent is first mentioned in a document in 1353. In 1514, a desolate fortress in Amelsdorf was sold, which is still mentioned in 1602. However, since Wisent Castle was built in 1571 under Valentin Polani (inscription above the main gate) and his wife Barbara, these are most likely two different structures.
In 1619, the castle was stormed and plundered by Buquoy's troops. The estates of Mörtersdorf and Sachsendorf and the village of Limberg later became part of the Wisent dominion and, with it, came into the possession of Altenburg Abbey in 1755.
Since a fire caused by lightning in 1900, Wisent Castle has a rectangular, single-story main building, as the second upper floor was removed. The wings surrounding the castle courtyard have arcades on both the ground floor and the upper floor.
Today, Wisent Castle is used by Altenburg Abbey as a manor farm.
