Winklarn Castle

The first documented mention as "Winchlorn" dates back to 1270. The market town of Winklarn was the seat of a closed Hofmark, which belonged to the district court of Neunburg vorm Wald until the 19th century.

In 1527, Hanns Fuchs from the influential Franconian noble family of the Fuchs von Wallburg received Winklarn as a fief from Emperor Charles V. This noble family built a castle in Winklarn, which served as the judicial and administrative center for the lordships of Winklarn, Reichenstein-Schönsee, and the Hofmark Frauenstein until the 19th century. In 1634, the estates and rights of Hans Friedrich Fuchs, a descendant of this family, were confiscated after he was unwilling to submit to re-Catholicization. His daughter Eva Johanna married Hans Wilhelm Freiherr von Aufseß zu Wüstenstein. Subsequently, Winklarn belonged to the von Aufseß family until Carl Siegmund Graf und Herr von Aufseß sold the Hofmark to Johann Friedrich Graf Lanthieri in 1732. Karl Wilhelm Graf von Eckart acquired the property from the Counts of Schönreuth in 1803. In 1822, the castle burned down in a major fire and was subsequently rebuilt.
