Winkelried Castle (Stans)

The estate, which takes its name from the Winkelried family, was acquired by them in the late 15th century. A significant renovation took place between 1560 and 1570 under Knight Melchior Lussy, who reshaped the castle. Another important construction phase occurred from 1599 to 1602, during which Lussy integrated Italian stylistic elements into the architecture. The oldest part of the castle is a tower-like structure in the south corner with thick walls. On the first floor, there is a house chapel, which was set up on the ground floor around 1600 for the paralyzed Knight Lussy and features a magnificent tiled floor with the coat of arms of Lussy and his fourth wife. After Lussy's death, his descendants inherited the property. Later, it passed to Landammann Jost Traxler and then to his son-in-law Karl Georg Kaiser, whose descendants still own it today.
