Wimmis Castle

It was built around 1100, originally owned by the Lords of Strättligen and then by the Barons of Weissenburg. In 1298, 1303, and 1334, it was besieged by Bern. Only five years later, in 1339, the Baron of Weissenburg helped his former opponents win the Battle of Laupen. In 1439/1449, Bern bought the castle along with the territory of the former district of Niedersimmental; the building became the seat of a Bernese bailiff and later of the government governor. Major renovations took place in 1613 and 1696. In 1950, a hall in the castle was renovated and the 15 visible surfaces of 4 capitals were designed by Erwin Friedrich Baumann.
