Willmendingen Castle
Willmendingen Castle is a castle in the village of Willmendingen near Schwerzen, a district of the municipality of Wutöschingen in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg.
The large rectangular building in the Late Renaissance style was built in 1609 by Johann Jakob von Beck, bailiff in Klettgau, Imperial Notary and Land Scribe of Vaduz, who received the village of Willmendingen as a male fief in 1607 for his numerous services.
In 1698, the forest bailiff Franz Leopold Beck von und zu Willmendingen attempted to sell the entire Willmendingen estate to St. Blasien Abbey, but this was unsuccessful. In 1801 or 1803, Franz Xaver von Beck sold the castle to Prince Josef II von Schwarzenberg, and the Princes of Schwarzenberg in Tiengen in turn sold it to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1812.
In 1920, the municipality of Schwerzen bought it. Today it is privately owned. The interior was modernised in 1992: modern apartments were installed, and a restaurant in the vaulted cellar.
Complex+
Originally, a Meierhof (stewardship) of Rheinau Abbey, the Ehrenspergerhof, was located here. The castle once included extensive land, a brickworks, the Willmendingen Mill, and the abandoned Schweikhof, of which the well still exists.
The castle had a small castle chapel and a rear stair tower with a sandstone spiral staircase. It has a large vaulted cellar, which was used for storing the wine once grown here (today a restaurant). The entrance portal with the coat of arms of the von Beck family was removed in 1903 and is now in the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts.
Also dismantled and removed were: surrounding wall, stables, wine press, chapel with turret and bell. Modern apartments were installed inside. Nothing remains of the former furnishings such as tiled stoves, painted coffered ceilings, etc. The large dormer window was reinstalled.
The chapel was a simple Gothic building. On the altar was an antependium with the alabaster coat of arms of the baronial family von Beck. It is located in the Semberg Chapel, built in 2002.
