Weyregg Castle
Weyregg Castle, also known as Freisitz Weyregg, was located in the municipality of Weyregg am Attersee in the Vöcklabruck district of Upper Austria (today Weyregger Str. 66).
In 1590, the small castle was built by Siegmund Widerroither. In 1591, he was the administrator of Kogl Castle. In 1595, Widerroither was elevated to the knighthood for his services on the Windisch-Croatian military border and was allowed to call himself "von und zu Weyregg" from 1602. In 1617, Widerroither, who had no descendants, sold the property to the wife of Count Franz Christoph Khevenhüller. He was succeeded in possession by his daughter Ida von Horvath. Weyregg was united with the Kammer dominion and thus lost its importance. With effect from January 1, 1619, the dominions of Weyregg and Kogl were leased to Abraham Grünpacher.
At the end of the 18th century, the castle began to decay. In 1797, the Weyregg rectory is said to have been built from the ruins of Freisitz Weyregg.
Further owners of the plots of land on which the castle stood were Dr. Alois Scherer (1890) and then Count Othmar von Überacker (1889). The latter had a new lakeside castle built in several construction phases on the site of the former castle.
Weyregg Castle then and now+
As can be seen on the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674 from the Topographia Austriae superioris modernae, the small castle was located directly on Lake Attersee. It was a two-story building, enclosed by a wall, with a small square tower at each corner. As late as 1815, the Lambach court judge Ignaz Gielge described Freisitz Weyregg as follows:
“The small castle was quite charming with double rows of windows and enclosed by circular walls in a square, with a charming little tower at each corner. This small castle is located near the lake, the church and the other houses set back somewhat, the view of Lake Attersee and the opposite region is indescribably beautiful...”

The new lakeside castle was bought in 1923 by the Christian Teachers' Association and the castle was converted into a teachers' recreation home. During the Nazi era, it housed a resettlement camp of the NS-Volkswohlfahrt. Afterwards, the building again served as an educational and holiday home for the Christian Teachers' Association for Upper Austria. In the 1990s, the building was transformed into the Seehotel Weyregg; currently, the business is for sale.
