Werra Castle (Leuk-Susten)

Werra Castle was built in 1445 by Junker Jean Perrini and his wife Katharina von Werra, daughter of Junker Petrus, Lord of Zermatt and Grand Castellan of Sion. In 1614, upon the death of the last representative of the Perrini family, the castle and its domain were purchased by the wealthy merchant Michael Mageran, who became Grand Bailiff. In 1657, the castle returned by inheritance to Jean-Gabriel Werra, Knight of the Golden Spur, Governor of St-Maurice, Captain in the service of France, who is the common ancestor of all current Werra family members. The castle was expanded in 1800 by Baron Ferdinand von Werra and remained in the family until 1912. In that year, Leo von Werra had to sell it.

It is currently a retirement home under the name St. Josef's Home.
