Weiterdingen Castle

Weiterdingen Castle, owned by the Barons von Hornstein, is located in Hilzingen-Weiterdingen in the district of Konstanz near Singen am Hohentwiel in the Hegau region. It lies a few kilometers west of Lake Constance, below the Hohenstoffeln, and about four kilometers north of the Swiss border.

The castle was built in 1683 by Balthasar Ferdinand Freiherr von Hornstein zu den drei Hohenstoffeln und Grüningen, a direct ancestor of the current owner, as a four-story, nine-axis building with a gabled roof and is fully developed. It is structured on the long sides by a three-axis central risalit each and has a cross-shaped floor plan. The south risalit houses the staircase. The floors are accessed by longitudinal corridors. Several halls as well as many salons, seminar and living rooms are preserved with restored stucco ceilings and original oak doors. There are patterned floors in historic oak parquet.

Due to the bankruptcy of the von Hornsteins, the castle and land were foreclosed in 1855. Citizens of Weiterdingen bought the castle and later sold it to a real estate dealer. The Archdiocese of Freiburg acquired the buildings in 1861 to establish a "spiritual penal institution" (Demeritenhaus) for priests who had committed offenses. From 1941 to 1945, it was used by the NSDAP. Until 1993, it was a mother's convalescent home and was managed by the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing. From 1994 to 2007, Weiterdingen Castle was an educational and conference center for young adults.

Today, Weiterdingen Castle is used as an event venue.
