Weißig Castle

The Bat Castle Weißig is located on the outskirts of Weißig, about one km from Hermsdorf, amidst the Driewitz-Milkeler Heaths in the municipality of Lohsa in Saxony.

The oldest document dates back to 1469, when the place "Weissigke" is mentioned. The nearby Eichberg was the scene of a significant battle. On May 19, 1813, a battle took place between Russian-Prussian allies and Napoleon's soldiers. Over 1700 soldiers of the Yorck Corps and 2000 Frenchmen fell. In 1913, 100 years later, a monument was inaugurated at the site of the battle.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle served as a hunting lodge for the noble family von Steinitz-Kolbitz. In 1921, the Weißig manor was bought by Ulrich Prince von Schönburg-Waldenburg. The Berlin lawyer Adolf Oeren was the last owner of the Weißig hunting lodge and the associated Steinitz estate with approx. 700 hectares of land in 1922. In 1945, Oeren was dispossessed and expelled by the communists. Subsequently, resettlers from the former eastern territories of the Reich found refuge in the hunting lodge. There were a total of ten families.

Despite the socialist housing program, the castle served as a residential building until 1997. The couple Christine and Siegfried Liepert bought the neglected property in 1996. One year later, it was renovated. The work was completed in 1998, so that the opening of the Bat Castle Weißig was celebrated on May 31, 1998.
