Weiler Castle

Weiler Castle is a late Mannerist castle in Weiler, a district of the municipality of Obersulm in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg.

The complex is the ancestral seat of the Barons of Weiler, the former local lords, who rebuilt the castle, located in the center of Weiler, as a moated castle from 1588 onwards, replacing a previous building. Above the main portal in the east, their coat of arms with the date 1590 is affixed. The main building in the south, a northern annex with a small tower, and two side wings in the west enclose an inner courtyard. The oldest part of the building is probably the castle kitchen on the ground floor, where the base of the residential tower of the previous building may have been incorporated.

The large castle park west of the building, newly laid out in the 19th century by the Stuttgart court gardener Johann Wilhelm Bosch (1782–1861), is bordered by the Nonnenbach, which comes from Lichtenstern and flows into the Schlierbach, a tributary of the Sulm, outside the village. The centuries-old horse chestnut in the castle park, with a trunk circumference of over six meters, is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Germany.

East of the castle grounds stands the Protestant parish church of Weiler, built in 1399 as a castle chapel. To the southeast, several outbuildings adjoin, including the former Weiler Rentamt (rent office), an ornamental half-timbered building from 1559.
