Weilburg Castle
Weilburg Castle is an impressive Baroque palace complex in Hesse, rising on a mountain spur above the Lahn and occupying a large part of Weilburg's old town. The complex, which combines Renaissance and Baroque elements, is one of the best preserved of its kind in the region.
History+
The site's origins date back to 906, when a "Castellum" existed here under the Conradines. In the 12th century, Weilburg passed to the Nassau counts. King Adolf of Nassau acquired the town in 1294 and granted it city rights. Under Count Johann Ernst von Nassau-Weilburg, extensive Baroque expansion took place from 1701 to 1721, harmoniously integrating the Renaissance-era main castle. After the residence moved to Kirchheimbolanden in 1741, Weilburg remained the seat of government. Following the loss of territories on the left bank of the Rhine, it briefly became a residential city again in 1801. In 1890, the castle passed into Luxembourgian ownership before being sold to the Prussian state in 1935. Since 1945, the State of Hesse has been the owner, with the princely crypt remaining a Luxembourgian exclave.
