Wasserburg Castle

In the 12th century, the area around Wasserburg belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The oldest records of the ministerial family of the Lords of Wasserburg can be found in a document from 1185, in which a Dietmar von Wasserberg is mentioned.

Another important representative of this family at the beginning of the 13th century was Heinrich von Wasserberg. His son Dietrich later opposed the Archbishop of Salzburg and therefore lost the lordship of Wasserberg. From the middle of the 13th century, Wasserburg appears as a Passau fief. In 1283, Otto von Haslau and Wulfing von Arnstein are mentioned as lords of Wasserburg. A short time later, the castle came into the possession of the Puchbergers.

In 1364, Stephan von Toppel named himself after the castle. In 1550, Christoph von Toppel sold Wasserburg, among other things, to his cousin Christoph von Zinzendorf. For almost 400 years, Wasserburg was the family seat of the Zinzendorfs. Between 1698 and 1718, Ludwig von Zinzendorf converted the Renaissance Wasserburg, which was probably built before 1550, into a comfortable Baroque castle. After the death of Karl von Zinzendorf in 1813, the property passed to Heinrich August Graf von Baudissin, who adopted the name and coat of arms of the Zinzendorfs.

In 1912, the Counts Baudissin-Zinzendorf sold the lordship to Count Heinrich von Fünfkirchen, who in turn sold it in 1923 to Carl Hugo Graf Seilern-Aspang. He had the castle modernized, but it was plundered and damaged in 1945. Restoration only took place in the years after 1989. Wasserburg still belongs to the Seilern-Aspang family.
