Wangen Castle
Wangen an der Aare Castle is a castle in the municipality of Wangen an der Aare in the canton of Bern.
The castle was most likely built in the 13th century by the Kyburgs and served as a bailiwick castle and for the protection and control of the important Aare crossing, and was a customs and staging post for Aare shipping. In 1313, Hartmann and Eberhard von Kyburg received the castle and town of Wangen as a fief from Duke Leopold III of Austria. In 1406, the Counts of Kyburg sold the place with all fiefs to the city of Bern. Bern used the castle as the seat of its landvogts until the French invasion in 1798. In 1687, the castle was significantly rebuilt and received its current appearance. Today, the castle houses the Government Administrator's Office.
