The Historic Building: A Journey Through Time+
From Medieval Origins to Baroque Splendor+

The history of the castle, as it stands today, dates back to thegothic period. The first documented mention of a fortified complex on this site dates back to the 13th century. At that time, it served as a strategically important outpost for local nobility, controlling trade routes and river crossings.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous transformations. From a simple defensive structure, it evolved into a representative residence. Particularly noteworthy are the extensive renovations in the 16th century, which gave the building its Renaissance character. During this period, magnificent halls were added, and the defensive walls were partially converted into decorative garden terraces.

The Baroque Masterpiece of the 18th Century+

The castle was rebuilt in 1771 on an older complex.

The current appearance of the castle is largely due to the comprehensive baroque redesign in the 18th century. Under the direction of the renowned architect Johann Balthasar Neumann, the castle was transformed into a magnificent baroque residence. Neumann's design combined functionality with artistic elegance, creating a harmonious overall impression.

During this construction phase, the impressive main facade with its ornate portal and the two flanking towers were created. Inside, magnificent stucco work, ceiling frescoes, and valuable tapestries adorned the state rooms. The castle chapel, with its richly decorated altar and impressive organ, also dates from this period.

The Castle in Modern Times+

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle experienced a varied history. It served as a residence for various noble families, was temporarily used as a military hospital, and even housed a boarding school for a few decades.

After extensive restoration work in the post-war period, the castle was opened to the public in the 1970s. Today, it is a popular destination for tourists and culture enthusiasts. It regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events.

The Castle Today: A Living Monument

Today, the castle is not only an impressive architectural monument but also a vibrant cultural center. Visitors can explore the historical rooms, stroll through the magnificent castle park, and learn about the eventful history of the building.

The castle museum offers fascinating insights into the lives of its former inhabitants and the artistic and architectural developments of past centuries. Special guided tours for children and educational programs make history tangible for all ages.
