Wallsee Castle
Wallsee Castle is a former stately home in the market town of Wallsee-Sindelburg in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria.
Wallsee Castle was closely connected with the local economy from the Middle Ages until about 1920. From 1895, it was inhabited by Archduchess Marie Valerie, a daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, with her husband, Archduke Franz Salvator. On June 11, 1895, Marie Valerie and Franz Salvator bought the castle from its then owner, Duke Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and had it completely renovated. After completion, the couple made a festive entry into the castle on the Danube on September 4, 1897. There was great jubilation in Wallsee. On April 24, 1918, their daughter Hedwig married Count Bernhard zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1881–1952) here; nine children were born from this marriage.
The castle is still privately owned by the family and is not publicly accessible. Some Habsburgs from the owning family of Wallsee Castle are buried in a crypt behind the main altar of the Sindelburg parish church.
