Waldsteg Castle

In Neusatz stands the so-called Waldsteg Water Castle, also known as Waldsteger Schlössle. Originally, a lowland castle stood on that site in the Middle Ages. The first references to a castle date back to 1294. It was originally surrounded by a moat and a rampart and could only be entered via a drawbridge. The castle was probably founded as a ministerial seat by the Cumber family from Ottersweier, who later called themselves Lords of Waldsteg. Significant structural changes date from the beginning of the 18th century, when the then owner Baron Carl Jacob Ferdinand von Plittersdorf tried to consolidate his possessions around Neusatz. In 1722, Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden acquired the castle and the associated estates. Between 1788 and 1962, the castle served as a rectory, then as a workshop for people with disabilities. Since 1998, the Bühl City History Institute has been housed in the castle.
