Waikhartsberg Castle, today Waikhartsberg Estate, is located in the eponymous district of the municipality of Waizenkirchen in the Grieskirchen district of Upper Austria.
The first documented mention dates back to 1625; Ehrenreich von Pranckh is named as the owner. Since the castle was already referred to as a noble seat at that time, it must have been built much earlier. The successor in ownership was Christoph Helmhart von Weißenwolff. In 1680, he sold the castle to Count Leopold von Kueffstein (Kuefstein). In 1750, the property was designated as a dowry for Leopoldine, daughter of Count Priesgott von Kueffstein. In this way, it came into the possession of Count Johann Weikhart von Spindler. Since he also owned Weidenholz Castle, both estates were merged, and Waikhartsberg followed all changes of ownership of Weidenholz for some time. Countess Maria Spindler brought both estates into her marriage with Count Johann Christoph von Gilleis. In 1857, General Count Herrmann von Attems acquired both estates through marriage, but after a fire at Weidenholz in 1876, he sold both to Josef Aichinger, who separated Waikhartsberg from the joint ownership.
Waikhartsberg Estate Today+
In 1926, the Upper Austrian provincial government acquired the property and equipped it as a practical farm for the agricultural winter school of Waizenkirchen. This was housed there for over 20 years. Under the next owner, Rudolf Pühringer, the estate was developed into a hotel business. Since 1968, the property, under the name "Gut Waikhartsberg," has been owned by the Froßdorfer family; it is run as an agricultural business and a hospitality establishment. Currently, major renovation works are underway.
On the first floor, there are remarkable tiled stoves and frescoed coats of arms.
