Wahrberg Castle

Wahrberg Castle, also known as Wahrberg Palace, is an early medieval spur castle on the 490 m above sea level spur of an elongated mountain ridge and also a district of the municipality of Aurach in the district of Ansbach (Middle Franconia) with 13 inhabitants.

In the 9th century, a square redoubt was built on a mountain spur in a spur position, where an early Celtic structure with a watchtower already stood, and was mentioned in 888. The spur castle probably served to secure a military road coming from the south to the Main and a salt road coming from the area of the Kocher near Schwäbisch Hall into the Middle Franconian region.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was expanded by the Lords of Wahrberg, who were closely related to the Staufer; it was their ancestral seat from 1119 to 1275 and subsequently, until 1805, owned by the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt and the seat of a bailiwick and high office.

After the castle burned down at the end of the 19th century, it was rebuilt in the classical style in 1905 and has been owned by the Bornebusch family ever since.

The Counts of Oettingen are also mentioned as former owners. The coat of arms from 1613 above the entrance points to Prince-Bishop Johann Christoph von Westerstetten and that from 1745 above the gate tower to Prince-Bishop Johann Anton von Freiberg.
