Wagenhofen Castle

The castle was built in 1588 on the site of a 13th-century moated castle by the Lords of Wagenhofen.

Originally designed as a Renaissance castle, it underwent significant alterations in the 18th century, transforming it into a Baroque residence. These changes included the addition of a grand staircase and elaborate stucco work in the main halls.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times. Notable owners include the princely family of Thurn und Taxis, who acquired it in 1803 and used it as a summer residence. Their tenure saw further embellishments, particularly in the castle's extensive gardens.

The castle is a prime example of the architectural evolution from the late Renaissance to the high Baroque period in Southern Germany.

The main building is characterized by its imposing facade, symmetrical layout, and a central courtyard. The original Renaissance elements, such as the sgraffito decorations, are still visible despite later Baroque additions.

The castle chapel, consecrated in 1601, is a jewel of early Baroque art. It features a magnificent altar piece and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint George, the patron saint of the Wagenhofen family.

The Baroque gardens, laid out in the French style, extend over several hectares and include geometrically arranged flowerbeds, fountains, and sculptures. A particular highlight is the orangery, built in the mid-18th century.

Today, the castle serves as a museum and a venue for cultural events.

The castle museum showcases historical furniture, art collections, and exhibits on the lives of its former residents. Visitors can explore the state rooms, the chapel, and parts of the private apartments.

Throughout the year, the castle hosts various events, including classical concerts, art exhibitions, and medieval festivals. The annual Christmas market in the castle courtyard is particularly popular.

The castle is open to the public from April to October. Guided tours are offered daily. There is a café and a gift shop on the premises. Parking is available free of charge.
