Waal Castle
In the 12th century, a castle was built by the Knight of Waal. In 1397, the castle was destroyed by the Augsburgers in the War of the Cities (parts of the castle in today's west wing are still present) and subsequently rebuilt. In 1401, ownership passed to the Lords of Freiberg, then to the Lords of Landau, who erected the castle with its four corner towers. In 1601, ownership passed to the Lords of Muggenthal and in 1820 to Hereditary Prince Erwein von der Leyen. In the mid-19th century, interior and exterior renovations took place. In 1907, further interior and exterior renovations were carried out.
