Vorderes Gundeldingen Castle

Vorderes Gundeldingen Castle is a remarkable historical building in Basel, Switzerland. It is one of the few remaining castles of the former Gundeldingen quarter and is characterized by its baroque character, which harmoniously blends into the urban environment.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 16th century when the cloth merchant Hieronymus Iselin commissioned its construction as a country estate. The project proved financially challenging, as Iselin reported to the Basel Council in 1567. After his death in 1584, his widow Ursula sold the property in 1596. Around 1666, the Thierry family, who had come to Basel as Reformed religious refugees, acquired the castle and owned it until 1710. It then passed into the possession of Johann Rudolf Beck, a university professor, under whose aegis the castle presumably underwent a comprehensive baroque renovation, documented in 1740 as a 'newly built dwelling'. In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times, including Christoph Merian-Hofmann and later Carl Wilhelm Forcart-Merian, who, after his wife's death, temporarily made it available to the Agricultural School for the Poor. Later, under Albert Ostertag, it served as a children's home for the Basel Mission. Despite the loss of many outbuildings in the 20th century, which gave way to a housing estate, the main building was preserved and officially declared a historical monument in 1992.
