Husum Castle

On the site of the current castle, the Franciscan Grey Monastery stood from the late 15th century. During the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved, and the lands fell to the Danish king. Duke Adolf of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf had the castle built between 1577 and 1582 in the Dutch Renaissance style. It served as a residence for stays of the ducal court on the west coast. After Duke Adolf I, his successors also used the castle, which, however, played no significant role in state history. From the 17th century, it became a widow's residence, including for Duchess Augusta and Maria Elisabeth, who lived there from 1660 to 1684 and initiated a cultural flourishing. After 1721, the castle came into the possession of the Danish royal house. King Frederick V initiated extensive renovations and modernization from 1750 to 1752. From 1752, the castle also housed the Husum district administration. After the German-Danish War in the 19th century, Schleswig-Holstein became Prussian, and the castle became the seat of the district administration and the district court. After World War II, the district of Husum bought the building. From 1973 into the 1980s, the castle was restored and repurposed for cultural uses.

Schloss vor Husum is located in Husum in the Nordfriesland district, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 12 m above sea level.

Today, the castle houses a museum and serves as a cultural center. It is open to the public and can be visited. The castle park is a regionally renowned attraction, especially during the annual crocus bloom.
