Vogelsang Castle

The manor house Schloss Vogelsang is located in the present-day municipality of Vogelsang-Warsin in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in the far east of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

On the foundations of a former castle, Bernd Friedrich von Enckefort had a two-story manor house built in 1711.

In 1828, a family burial site of the von Enckefort family followed, which is now a protected monument, and between 1845 and 1847, the manor house was replaced by a new building in the Neo-Gothic style under the lord of the castle Eduard Friedrich von Enckefort, for which Eduard Knoblauch and Karl Friedrich Schinkel had created the plans. After a fire in 1937, it received an additional mezzanine floor, so that it now has three floors; however, the renovation after this misfortune was carried out in a rather sober architectural style. The castle is a sixteen-axis building with octagonal corner towers and battlements in the Tudor Gothic style. On the main facade there is a polygonal central risalit. The main axes of the building are laid out in a north-south and east-west direction; the floor plan is largely axially symmetrical.

In front of the main portal there is a rondel. The castle is surrounded by a park of about 12000 square meters.

In 1914, Eduard Friedrich von Enckevort fell in the First World War. He was the last lord of Vogelsang from the von Enckevort family, as his sons could not hold the property. The manor house was then initially used as a rural boarding school and in 1934 it was transferred to the Reichsbund der Deutschen Beamten (Reich Federation of German Civil Servants), who set up a training camp there. This was named "Franz-Schwede-Coburg-Beamtenlager". During the Second World War, it served as a military hospital, then as a children's home "August Bebel". After the children's home moved out in 1993, the building stood empty. In the 2000s, the building was renovated, divided into condominiums and offered for sale. The building is considered a historically valuable building.
