Vogelsang Castle

The Vogelsang manor house, built in the Tudor Gothic style, is a two-story plastered brick house in the municipality of Lalendorf (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), essentially dating from the construction period around 1884. The house, currently undergoing renovation, features a continuous battlement.

Vogelsang was first mentioned in a document in 1379, when Prince Lorenz von Werle transferred the estate to the brothers von Wozenitz as property. The Rostock noble family von Wozenitz owned the estate for more than three and a half centuries, until Vogelsang was taken over by the noble family von Plessen in 1734 and managed until 1834; the Plessens also established the village of Vogelsang. Subsequently, ownership changed more frequently during the further course of the 19th century, with the Manecke family, A. L. C. Rudloff auf Frauenmark, and the Rudloff family becoming the next owners.

In 1884, the Hamburg merchant Julius Hüniken acquired the estate. Hüniken had the manor house representatively renovated in the Tudor style in 1893 and an English landscape park laid out. In the central risalit of the new manor house, he placed his family's coat of arms as well as the year of purchase and renovation. The Hünikens owned Vogelsang until its expropriation during the land reform in Germany in 1945; it subsequently became a state-owned farm. The manor house has been back in private ownership since 2010. In 2011, emergency renovation of the dilapidated building began, which was completed in spring 2012. From the original estate ensemble, a stable from 1897, a water tower, the coachman's house, and the inspector's house – in addition to other stables and remnants of the former park grounds – have also been preserved.
