Vik Castle
Vik Castle, an impressive edifice in Sweden, is picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Originally conceived as a defensive fortress, it transformed over the centuries into an elegant French-style castle and now serves as a modern conference center.
History+
The first documented mention of the estate of Vik, then called Vihc, dates back to 1303, when it was owned by Ramborg Israelsdotter. Later, the estate passed to the noble family Bielke, who had a defensive castle built around 1450. In the 17th century, the complex underwent extensive renovation into a representative castle. In 1521, according to Bishop and chronicler Peder Swart, Gustav Vasa is said to have besieged a small house named Vik, which is now identified with the castle. Ownership frequently changed hands through inheritance and marriage, with Gustaf Horn and the noble families of Liewen and von Essen among the owners. The property was first sold in 1912.
