Vesenaz Castle

The history of Château Vesenaz is closely linked to the donation of the village of Vésenaz by Count Amadeus III of Geneva in 1336 to the clergy of Bellerive. From the 15th century, the site of the current château was occupied by an estate belonging to the Messaz family. Around 1473, the already erected château passed into the possession of Madeleine de Pitigny and her sons. Due to financial difficulties and political allegiance to the Duke of Savoy, the sons lost the property to Jacques de Sionnas, who described it in 1520 as a “tall house with an orchard and courtyards.” Later, the château changed hands multiple times through marriage and sale, including the de Vege and Favre families. In the 17th century, inheritance disputes arose, which were settled by arbitration in 1695, after which the estate passed to the Vaudenet family. In the 18th century, the château was sold again and, in the 19th and 20th centuries, divided into two parts belonging to different families.

Château Vesenaz is located in the village of Vésenaz in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. It stands at an elevation of approx. 423 m above sea level.

Today, Château Vesenaz is privately owned. The northern tower, once crowned by a pointed roof, was partially demolished in 1892 and reduced to the height of the main building. Despite surrounding development, the château maintains its dominant presence.
