Veltheim Castle

The current owners of the estate, the von Veltheim family, are first mentioned in documents in 1160. They built the moated castle Veltheim. In 1430, the castle was significantly destroyed by citizens from Braunschweig who were fighting against the obstruction of their trade routes to the east. Around 1494, the destroyed castle was sold to the von Honrodt family. In 1537, Ernst von Honrodt was enfeoffed by Duke Heinrich the Younger of Braunschweig with the castle, the court, the church patronage, and the forests. In 1555, he transformed the moated castle into a palace. In 1832, the Veltheim family, by then residing in Bartensleben near Helmstedt, reacquired their ancestral estate. Today, the farmer and estate owner Alexander von Veltheim is the mayor of the municipality. The Veltheim family has held the church patronage in Veltheim for over 400 years.

On the way to the castle lies the Cuntercamp. A tombstone in the church commemorates the death of the squires Hans and Christoph von Honrodt in 1531 on Ascension Day. They are said to have argued over a farmer's daughter until both lay in their blood. The massive walls of Veltheim's moated castle are also the subject of numerous legends, which speak of "evil spirits."
