Vallø Castle

The origins of Vallø Castle can be traced back to the 13th century, with its first documented mention around the year 1285. Of the original buildings, only remnants remain today. The current form of the south and west wings, as well as the two prominent towers, dates back to 1586, when Mette Rosenkrantz had these parts constructed. The other wings of the castle were built during the 16th and 17th centuries. Over the centuries, ownership of the castle changed hands multiple times, belonging to important Danish noble families such as Falk, Krage, Rosenkrantz, and Skeel. In 1708, King Frederick IV acquired the estate for his consort, Anna Sophie Reventlow. His son Christian VI transferred ownership in 1737 to his wife Sophie Magdalene of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, who established a convent for unmarried noblewomen there, which existed until 1976. Since then, the revenues from the castle's extensive lands have been used for charitable purposes. In 1976, the castle served as a filming location for the movie "The Olsen Gang Sees Red" under the name "Borreholm".

Vallø Castle is located in Valløby, within the municipality of Stevns on the Danish island of Sjælland (Zealand). It stands at an elevation of approximately 17 meters above sea level.

Today, Vallø Castle is privately owned and is a well-maintained estate whose extensive lands serve charitable purposes.
