Västerås Castle

The origins of Västerås Castle date back to the 12th century, when a fortified tower was built on this site, which can still be found in the northeastern corner of the present-day castle. The complex served as a residence for the royal bailiff and as a protective structure for the then-important trading city of Västerås. Over the centuries, the castle was gradually expanded due to repeated conflicts, particularly during the Kalmar Union and the Engelbrekt Rebellion. After its conquest by Gustav Vasa in 1522, Västerås became a royal residence. Two decisive Riksdags (parliaments) took place here: in 1527, the Reformation was introduced in Sweden, and in 1544, the hereditary monarchy was established. Under Gustav Vasa and later John III, extensive renovations were carried out, including the establishment of a royal floor and the construction of a castle church. With the death of Catherine of Palatinate-Zweibrücken in 1638, its era as a royal residence ended, leading to its decline. In the late 17th century, renovation began under Mathias Spieler. The castle also served as a prison, notably for Erik XIV. A major fire in 1736 destroyed large parts, after which Carl Hårleman directed the reconstruction. Further renovations took place in the 20th century, including a comprehensive restoration in the 1920s and again in the 1960s.

Västerås Castle is located in the city of Västerås, in the Västerås district in the Västmanland region, Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approximately 18 meters above sea level.

Today, Västerås Castle houses a museum, offering visitors insights into its rich history. A small part of the castle also serves as the residence for the provincial governor.
