Vaduz Castle

The exact date of Vaduz Castle's construction is not fully established, but it is thought that the first parts of the building were erected in the 12th century. A residential tower, dendrochronologically dated to 1287, complemented the likely older keep. The complex was first documented in 1322 when it was mortgaged. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the Counts of Werdenberg and the Barons of Brandis. During the Swabian War in 1499, it was burned down by the Eidgenossen but later rebuilt. Under the Counts of Sulz, who owned it from 1507 to 1613, the castle underwent significant expansions and fortifications, including the construction of a chapel and two rondels. Since 1712, Vaduz Castle has been owned by the Princes of Liechtenstein. After a period of decay, it was extensively restored between 1905 and 1912 under Prince Johann II and further developed into a permanent princely residence by Prince Franz Josef II from 1939 onwards.

Vaduz Castle is situated on a rock terrace approximately 120 meters above the municipality of Vaduz in the Vaduz district, within the Oberland region of Liechtenstein. It stands at an elevation of about 573 meters above sea level.

Today, Vaduz Castle is the official seat of the Princely House of Liechtenstein and serves as the private residence of the princely family. For this reason, it is not accessible to the public. The reigning Prince receives heads of state and other visitors there.
