Vadstena Castle

The construction of Vadstena Castle began at the behest of King Gustav Vasa in 1545 and was not completed until 1620. Originally conceived as a quadrangular fortress, it consisted of a three-story main building with a prominent central tower, while the other sides were protected by ramparts. Round corner bastions and a water-filled moat surrounded the entire complex. Under Johan III, it served as a royal residence and was splendidly furnished, but a fire in 1598 destroyed these furnishings. In the early 18th century, the castle was abandoned as a royal residence and subsequently used as a granary and factory. In 1895, the World Student Christian Federation was founded here. A provincial archive moved into the premises in 1899 and remains there to this day. In the 20th century, the historic building underwent gradual restoration.

Vadstena Castle is located in the town of Vadstena, in the Vadstena district, in the Swedish province of Östergötland, at an elevation of approximately 110 m above sea level.

Today, Vadstena Castle houses a provincial archive and a museum, both accessible to visitors. The structure is in very good condition, which is the result of extensive restoration work carried out in the 20th century.
