To be privately owned
Uster Castle
Uster Castle, a prominent landmark of the city of the same name in the Canton of Zurich, is perched on a western hill spur and boasts a long history. The complex, now privately owned, combines medieval origins with later transformations into a representative edifice.
History+
The exact origins of the first fortification on the castle hill are not fully clarified, but a complex is presumed to have existed as early as 1000 or 1100. Around 1200, part of the property, including Uster Castle, passed to the Barons of Bonstetten. The oldest visible parts of the residential tower date from this period. In 1267, the Bonstettens received Uster as a fief from Count Rudolf of Habsburg. During the Appenzell War in the early 15th century, Schwyz troops occupied the complex, after which Johannes von Bonstetten concluded a Burgrecht treaty with Zurich in 1407. A fire destroyed the castle in 1492, and another fire struck the newly built wooden house in 1526. Subsequently, the tower was redesigned, and the complex was rebuilt in 1529 as a representative castle. After several changes of ownership and a period of decay, the castle was restored and expanded in 1752. In the 19th century, it temporarily served as the seat of the district administration before being acquired by Jakob Heusser-Staub in 1916, restored, and donated to the city of Uster as a foundation. It then housed the Cantonal Farmers' Wives' School and later a private school.
