Untermettingen Castle

Untermettingen Castle is located in the Steinatal in Untermettingen, a district of Ühlingen-Birkendorf in the Waldshut district.

The castle is perched on a protruding rock spur about 20 meters above the Steina in the center of Untermettingen. An important Steina crossing is said to have existed here as early as Roman times. This road ran via Bechtersbohl to Schwerzen, via Horheim to Bettmaringen, Wellendingen to Bonndorf.

According to a deed of gift from 855, a priest Meginhard handed over his estates in Mettingen to the Rheinau monastery. Wolf von Mettingen also transferred his property to the monastery in 875. In 1279, the brothers Rudolf and Johann von Mettingen are mentioned as lords of the castle. In 1349, the St. George's knight Friedrich von Ofteringen is mentioned. In 1427, Heinrich von Erzingen was named as patron, he administered mortgaged properties of the Princes of Fürstenberg and lived in the castle in 1437. In 1462, he acquired the castle and the villages of Obermettingen and Untermettingen as well as Obereggingen, including people and goods, for six gulden annually, thereby also acquiring the castle rights to Schaffhausen. In 1599, Johann Jakob von Beck, the chief bailiff of the Sulz lordship of Mettingen, lived here. In the deed of sale of February 1, 1610, Carl Ludwig Count of Sulz sold his lordship of Mettingen to his "dear brother-in-law and brother" Maximilian von Pappenheim, Count of the Landgraviate of Stühlingen. In 1724, it was converted into an agricultural estate. Around 1900, the farm was sold to a farmer whose ancestors were in the forestry service of the princely house.
