The History of the Building+
From the Baroque Palace to the Residential Castle+

The castle was built in the second half of the 18th century and rebuilt around 1900 under Baron Rothschild.

The original Baroque palace was built between 1765 and 1769 by the master builder Franz Anton Bagnato for Prince Joseph Friedrich von Waldburg-Wolfegg. It was a three-story building with a mansard roof and a richly structured facade. The interior was characterized by magnificent stucco work and frescoes.

After the death of Prince Joseph Friedrich, the castle changed hands several times. In 1870, it was acquired by Baron Wilhelm von Rothschild, who had it extensively rebuilt and modernized. The Baroque facade was simplified, and the interior was adapted to the taste of the time. The castle received a new roof and an additional story.

The Castle in the 20th Century+

In 1906, the castle was inherited by Baroness Mathilde von Rothschild, who continued the modernization. She had a new garden laid out and the interior further refined. During the Second World War, the castle was used as a military hospital and suffered some damage.

After the war, the castle was returned to the Rothschild family. In 1957, it was sold to the state of Baden-Württemberg and has since been used as a police academy. Extensive renovation work was carried out in the 1980s and 1990s to preserve the historic building.

Architecture and Features+
The Exterior Appearance+

The castle presents itself today as a stately, three-story building with a simple facade. The mansard roof and the central risalit with a triangular pediment are striking. The windows are framed by sandstone elements. The main entrance is emphasized by a portico with columns.

The Interior+

The interior of the castle has largely been preserved in its historical form. Particularly impressive are the grand staircase, the ballroom, and the various salons. The rooms are decorated with valuable stucco work, frescoes, and historical furniture. The castle also houses a comprehensive collection of paintings and sculptures.

The Castle Park

The castle is surrounded by a spacious park, which was laid out in the 19th century. It is characterized by old trees, winding paths, and various sculptures. A special feature is the rose garden, which houses a variety of historical rose species. The park invites you to stroll and relax.
