Unteres Mittleres Castle Gundeldingen

The earliest documents mentioning the property date back to 1398, when knight Rudolf von Arberg relinquished his claims. Originally, it was likely a moated castle, surrounded by a wall, a moat, and a drawbridge. In the 16th century, the building was renovated, blending late Gothic elements with Renaissance details. A special feature is the recessed half-timbered upper floor, suggesting a later addition. In 1549, Thomas Platter, a former goatherd and later rector of the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz, acquired the small castle and its estate for 660 guilders. Despite financial difficulties, he developed the property into one of Basel's most significant estates, with livestock breeding, fishponds, and fruit cultivation. His son Felix Platter, a renowned Basel city physician, inherited the estate but sold it before 1596. Around 1830, the property was described as a half-timbered house with outbuildings. In 1842, it became the property of the Bürgerhospital, which used it until 1958, partly for milk production for patients. In the 1960s, demolition was considered, but heritage conservationists and the Allgemeine Konsumverein Coop saved the building. The “Stiftung Thomas Platter Haus” enabled a comprehensive renovation by 1974. Until 2006, it housed the rectorate of the Grossbasel-Ost primary school and the accident department of the Basel-Stadt public prosecutor's office. Today, it is privately owned.
