Unterellen Castle

The site is dominated by a late medieval castle complex. Already in the 15th century, the noble family of Herda began to expand this medieval fortification as another family seat. In the courtyard, in addition to some Gothic portals, one finds a stone head inserted into the wall – probably a defensive charm – as part of the original building fabric. Of the fortifications themselves, only the massive outer walls of the main buildings and the castle gate have been preserved. Large areas of the former castle complex were abandoned in the 20th century and demolished after structural decay. Currently, the complex is used as a daycare center by the Untereller Castle Ghosts.
