Tynnelsö Castle

The first documented mention of Tynnelsö dates back to 1282, and by 1306, the estate belonged to the Diocese of Strängnäs. It is believed that Bishop Tord Gunnarsson had the first stone building erected in the late 14th century. Under Bishop Kort Rogge, a new stone house was built in the 1490s, forming the basis of the castle's current lower floors. In 1522, the estate was conquered by Gustav Vasa and transferred to royal ownership in 1527. Gustav Vasa frequently visited the castle, and his wife Margareta Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud passed away there in 1551. Later, Tynnelsö passed to Duke Karl, Gustav Vasa's tenth child, who gave the building its current appearance in the 1590s. The castle also belonged to Duke Carl Phillip and Queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg. Queen Christina gifted it to her cousin Elisabet Gyllenhielm in 1636, but by 1681, it was repossessed by the Crown under Karl XI. After Karl XII settled a debt with Anna Woynarowska using the castle in 1725, the building temporarily fell into disrepair. Around 1800, the Hebbe family converted the estate into a family entail and shortly thereafter had the complex repaired, during which parts were demolished and a distinctive lantern was added.

Tynnelsö Castle is located in the municipality of Strängnäs, in the district of Strängnäs, in the Södermanland region of Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approximately 13 meters above sea level.

Today, Tynnelsö Castle is privately owned. It is managed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, to whom it has belonged by donation since 1940.
