Tulbing Castle

The castle originated from a farmstead of Seitenstetten Abbey. The abbey had already received an estate in Tulping as a donation from the noble free Udalschalch von Stille und Heft upon its founding in 1109. After the Turkish threat in Lower Austria was finally averted after 1683, Seitenstetten had its previously rather simple farm expanded into the Mönchshof free farm. In the second quarter of the 18th century, Abbot Paul de Vitsch, who was otherwise quite fond of building, had the manor house representatively designed. When Abbot Kolumban Zehetner had the noble estate auctioned in 1826, the Viennese court jeweler Josef Wieser was awarded the bid. The next owners were in 1842 the imperial chamberlain August Freiherr von Thysebaert and then the bourgeois master tailor Johann Kohaun from Vienna. In 1861, the building came into the possession of the banker Alois Männer, who had it expanded into a small castle. The stock market crash of 1873 unfortunately also brought him into serious financial difficulties, and so it was acquired by Ignaz Pollak, who, however, already sold it in 1879 to Prince Georg Maurocordato. The latter represented the K.u.K. Monarchy as a diplomat in Paris and had partridges bred in Tulbing in his absence. Maurocordato made the castle available to his wife Irene, born Freiin von Sina, and had it newly furnished. However, due to illness, his wife was never able to move into her new residence.

After 1894, the castle had frequently changing owners. Among them was the Kammersänger Hubert Leuer, who was married to the opera singer Berta Kiurina.

In 1984, the Haberler family acquired the property and made it what it is today. Josef and Monika Haberler were looking for a place for their then three horses. Their eight children romped through the castle and garden and decided that this was the right place. The parents were quickly convinced and acquired the property, which was in a very dilapidated structural condition at the time. To this day, with great attention to detail, the castle is continuously being painstakingly restored by the family themselves. A beautifully designed park was created around the building, which captivates with its wild, blooming beauty. An orchard and vegetable garden also ensure a certain degree of down-to-earthness. The family operates an equestrian facility on the premises, as well as a café - restaurant, from whose terrace one can enjoy a wonderful view of the complex.
