Tüschenbroich Castle
Schloss Tüschenbroich is a castle complex near the village of Tüschenbroich, approx. 25 km west of Mönchengladbach in the source region of the Schwalm river.
The historical nucleus was the motte from the Carolingian period, which is now overgrown with trees. This Tüschenbroich motte (archaeological monument on an island in the middle of the castle pond) was built in the 9th century as a fortification and moated castle with a defensive mound and was first mentioned in a document in 1172 as Thuschinbroc. The buildings burned down during the Thirty Years' War.
Tüschenbroich belonged to Wassenberg and later to the Duchy of Jülich.
In 1624, Franz von Spiering bought the war-damaged Tüschenbroich for 24,200 Reichstaler. He had the complex rebuilt as a moated castle on the "mainland", with the former outer bailey being converted into the main castle as a 35-meter long brick building with a tower. The reconstruction work continued into the 18th century. Only one tower of the older outer bailey complex remains.
In 1876, further renovation work followed after the castle had been severely damaged by a storm.
Schloss Tüschenbroich is now privately owned.
Farm Buildings and Chapel+
The castle included an oil mill, a thatched half-timbered building from the 18th century with a water wheel and edge runner mill. The mill - at its core from the 14th/15th century - produced flax oil until 1912. Today it is an artist's studio and is also used for events.
Further into the Tüschenbroich forest on the way to Geneiken stands the baroque Ulrichskapelle, dating from the 17th century. The legend of Count Heinrich von Melich, who had a robber captain sentenced to death without realizing that it was his own son Ulrich, whom he had disowned years earlier, is associated with it.
The former grain mill belonging to the castle has been converted into a restaurant, which is also popular for family celebrations and events.
Summer leisure facilities by the pond include a mini-golf course and boat rental. The Tüschenbroich forest is a popular local recreation area for hiking and cycling tours on the southern edge of the German-Dutch Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park.
