Triestewitz Castle

A castle in Triestewitz is first mentioned in 1251 as being in the possession of the Knights of Triestewitz. It originally dates from the 10th-11th century. From 1473, the castle was owned by the von Falcke family, but due to a lack of heirs, it reverted to the Elector of Saxony. In 1557, Melchior von Runge received the castle as a fief and, in the following years, converted it into a Renaissance-style palace.

However, looting and destruction during the Thirty Years' War again severely affected Triestewitz Castle. In later years, ownership changed hands several times. After the extinction of the von Runge family in the mid-17th century, the estate belonged to, among others, the von Werthern, von Rechenberg, and von Schönberg families. Finally, in 1790, Arnd Volrad von Stammer from the House of Wörmlitz, the Margravial-Brandenburgian and Swedish Master of the Horse, took over the property. Triestewitz remained in the possession of this noble family until the expropriation and expulsion by the communists in 1945. After the last wartime turmoil, up to 20 refugee families lived in the castle.

The architecture of the castle is characterized by the reconstruction after a fire in 1758. In February 1965, the tower, which until then had given the castle a stately appearance, was demolished down to the roof structure. Initial renovation measures of the exterior plaster in 1973-74 by the municipality of Arzberg contributed to the preservation of the complex. A complete renovation of the building complex in 1996-98 by the Pawlik family, who had previously acquired the castle, finally led to its current use as an accommodation establishment with two holiday apartments and six apartments.
