Travers Castle

The first documented mention of the noble house of Travers dates back to 1525. Just a few decades later, in 1553, a barn was added. A flood of the Areuse in 1572 is said to have damaged parts of the old castle. Two years later, in 1574, Jean of Neuchâtel, who was also co-regent of Vaumarcus, received permission to expand his estate. In 1656, the State Council intervened to oblige the inhabitants of Travers to assist in procuring materials for castle repairs. A division of the building in 1692 resulted in Charles-Auguste and Frédéric-Louis de Bonstetten receiving the western part of the building, while Henri Sandoz, Lord of Noiraigue, was granted the eastern part, and partition walls were erected. The eastern half was sold to Jean-Henri Jeanrenaud in 1750. After the death of Jean de Bonstetten, the western part passed to Jean-Jacques de Sandoz in 1761. Finally, the Sandoz-Rosières repurchased the eastern part of the building in 1782.

Travers Castle is located in the village of Travers, within the Val-de-Travers in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It is situated at an elevation of around 734 meters above sea level.

Today, Travers Castle houses public services and serves as an administrative building. It is thus a vibrant part of the local infrastructure.
