The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was destroyed in 1248 and subsequently rebuilt. Above the baroque portal, an inscription from 140-144 AD is immured. In the following centuries, the castle was extended and rebuilt multiple times. From 1825-1964, the castle was owned by the Barons Geymüller. Today, the Museum of Prehistory of Lower Austria is housed in the castle.
