Torup Caastle

The origins of Torup Castle can be traced back to approximately 980 AD. The construction of the current castle began in the mid-16th century under the Danish noblewoman Görvel Fadersdotter of the Sparre family. Through her marriage to Privy Councillor Lave Brahe, the estate passed to the Grubbe family. During this period, King Christian IV was a frequent guest and ordered the creation of a lake around the castle, which existed until 1775. Over the centuries, Torup changed hands multiple times, belonging to, among others, Corfitz Ulfeldt, the Danish royal house, and the Beck noble family. In the 1790s, the Austrian estate manager Franz Xaver Schober lived here, and his son, the poet Franz von Schober, was born here. In 1811, the castle was the site of a peasant uprising against forced conscription, which ended in bloodshed. Around 1812, the Stjernblad family and Court Marshal Gustaf Julius Coyet acquired the property and had the dilapidated building renovated. In the 20th century, it passed to the von Leithner family through marriage, who sold it to the city of Malmö in 1950, with the heirs retaining a right of use until 2035.

Torup Castle is situated in Bara, a district of the Svedala municipality in the Skåne region, Sweden, at an elevation of approximately 33 meters above sea level.

Torup Castle is privately owned. It is a three-story brick building with a square floor plan, complemented by an octagonal tower in the northwest and a round tower in the southeast. Directly adjacent to the castle is a 365-hectare recreational area with paths through a beech forest. An 18th-century storage building now serves as a visitor center with changing rooms, a strength training facility, and a café.
