Torny Castle
The first mention of Torny-le-Grand, then the property of the Abbey of St. Maurice, dates back to 766. Afterwards, it belonged to the Counts of Savoy until 1360. Thus, the lordship knew various owners: Vilar, Bonvillars, Bennevil, Billens, Challant, Alex, before the Diesbach family acquired it through alliance in 1602. This branch was henceforth called von Diesbach-Torny.
Jean-Joseph-Georges von Diesbach-Orny (1699-1772), husband of Anne-Marie von Montenach, had the castle built between 1730 and 1745, and then the parish church in 1754.
Jean-Joseph-Georges von Diesbach-Torny was an officer of the Holy Roman Empire, which led to his appointment as Count and Prince by the German Emperor Charles VI, the last of the direct line of the Habsburgs.
The lordship belonged to them until the fall of the Ancien Régime in 1798.
The buildings of the castle, i.e., the manor house, the chapel, the stables, and the oven, are symmetrically grouped in a park surrounded by a wall.
The main building is a majestic edifice, covered with a mansard roof. It is now private property.
