Thurnstein Castle

Thurnstein Castle was built in the 13th century on a hill south of Postmünster and changed owners several times after its construction. At the end of the 17th century, the castle took on its present form as a three-winged complex open to the south, with three floors and two towers. In the east wing is the castle chapel "Maria Heimsuchung", described by connoisseurs as a masterpiece. The castle complex is located on the north side of the very large, four-sided castle courtyard, whose buildings have been completely restored in recent years. The courtyard itself has been redesigned and relandscaped.

During the Second World War, the SS and the Gauleitung Bayreuth were quartered in Thurnstein Castle. Because of this fact, many Postmünster residents feared the destruction of the town shortly before the end of the war in 1945. However, the Gauleitung left the Thurnstein location on May 1, 1945, to save their lives from the advancing Americans. On the same afternoon, the first Allied tanks reached the town. As was later learned, the Americans would have shelled Thurnstein and Postmünster if they had known that the SS was quartered there.
