Thundorf Castle

On the castle hill above the village, near the cemetery, remnants of the former castle's ramparts can still be found today, which was built around the mid-12th century under the knightly family of Thundorf.

In the 14th/15th century, the Lords of Schaumberg inhabited the Ganerbenburg. After its destruction in the Peasants' War, they built the moated castle in the valley in 1610. Of the planned 4-tower complex, only the west wing with two dome-crowned corner towers was realized.

In 1676, plundering during the Thirty Years' War brought the Lords of Schaumburg into such financial distress that they sold their property for 57,000 Rhenish Thalers to the family of Rosenbach. This included not only the castle, subjects, and rights, but the entire Thundorf district and the villages of Rothhausen and Theinfeld.

When the Rosenbach family died out on the male side in 1806, the Grand Duke of Würzburg declared the Burggrafschaft Thundorf, which had by then become a Würzburg fief, to be vacant and escheated. 700 acres of land were divided among the farmers, 750 hectares of forest fell to the Prince-Bishopric. The castle estate was sold. Since the last village lords were Catholic, Thundorf largely became Catholic again and the seat of the parish.

Since 1816, the Catholic parish church "St. Laurentius" has been located in the moated castle. A renovation and extension only completed the quadrangle in 1977 and has since housed a baptismal chapel with very interesting wall paintings.
