Thun Castle
The massive keep, which still stands today, was built around 1190 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen and passed to the Counts of Kyburg as early as 1218, who extended the castle with what is now the uppermost floor. Since 1375, it has been the official seat of Bern and since 1888, it has housed a historical museum.
In the castle courtyard, there is a 31.6m deep draw well. West of the keep, the so-called New Castle was built in 1429 on the walls of older predecessor buildings. This late Gothic building housed the offices and living quarters of the Bernese mayors. The Regional Court of Bernese Oberland was located here until the end of 2009.
On September 21, 2006, the City Council (legislature) decided to purchase Thun Castle and a large part of the castle hill from the Canton of Bern.
