Thürn Castle

In 1243, a fortified building is mentioned here for the first time. It was owned by Wülfing von dem Thurn. This fortified building belonged to Seyfried von Mahrenberg in 1267 and to the brothers Heinrich and Weriandus von Thürn from 1271 to 1294.

Around 1300, the Friesach Vicedom Rudolf von Fohnsdorf renounced his rights over Thürn to his lord, Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg. The old noble family of the Lords of Thürn had probably already died out by then. Archbishop Konrad enfeoffed Dietmar von Preitenfurt with the fortress. In 1323, Friedrich von Lonsberg resided here. In the first half of the 16th century, Thürn was owned by the Lords of Reisberg, but Hieronymus von Reisberg sold the complex to the Lords of Eibiswald.

Amelreich von Eibiswald had the castle extensively expanded and modernized between 1578 and 1590. His granddaughter and heiress Maria-Eleonore married Wilhelm Otto Count von Schrattenbach. He sold the dominion in 1675 to Archbishop Max Gandolf von Khuenburg of Salzburg, who transferred it to the Diocese of Lavant four years later. In 1835, Bishop Ignaz Franz Zimmermann saved the castle, which was already in danger of collapsing, from ruin through extensive restoration. When the Diocese of Lavant was moved from St. Andrä to Marburg in 1859, the Jesuits moved into the vacant episcopal residence in St. Andrä. They had also bought Thürn Castle with the former cathedral chapter. In 1922, it passed into private hands and after several changes of ownership, it was finally acquired by the Hollinger family.
