Theuerwang Castle

The former Theuerwang Castle, today Gasthaus Schauflinger, is located in the eponymous district of the municipality of Vorchdorf in the Gmunden district of Upper Austria. (Theuerwang 13).

Theuerwang is first mentioned in a sales letter to Wilhering Abbey in 1279. Its then owner (named without a first name) was a Tewrwanger. His sons Otaker and Christianus are mentioned as witnesses in various letters around 1300. In 1336, Heinrich von Alharting, on behalf of Otaker's children, sold the "Hof zu Twerwang" to Kremsmünster Abbey. The Theuerwangers also appear as Eggenbergers and are found in the service of the city of Steyr and the Schaunbergers. Theuerwang then passed to Ulrich von Capellen, from whom Heinrich der Theurwanger bought it back on October 18, 1346. In 1354, Johann Theuerwanger is mentioned here, and in 1372, Weimar Teuerwanger's wife Chunigunde. The following Theuerwangers are also listed: Dietrich I around 1363, his son was Dietrich II. A Theuerwanger rests in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Vienna; his epitaph reads: "Here lies buried the heir Caspar Theuerwang after the birth of Christ." His coat of arms is preserved, but the year is illegible. His son was Wolfgang II, who sealed a sales letter from Wolfgang Rotelmayr on March 10, 1471. In 1492, a Hans Theuerwang from Au Castle near Roitham and in 1511, a Stephan Teuerwanger are mentioned. After 1525, the Theuerwangers disappear from the annals of history. Theuerwang passed to the Turnperger family; of whom are mentioned: Conrad Tunperger, Lenhard Tunberger (1520), Christoph Tunberger (1544), Caintz Tunperger (1568). In 1632, a Wolf Weixelpaumer followed. Further owners or feudal tenants are not known.

Theuerwang was a fief of Kremsmünster Abbey in 1463. After the extinction of the Theuerwanger family, the abbey's administrative court was established here in 1463. The castle burned down around 1880.
